Description:This three (3) hour SBIRT skill building workshop, lead by MASBIRT trainers, is designed for school health personnel who will be directly involved in implementing SBIRT in their schools. Implementation planning requires working through logistics and clinical questions. This session will give participants opportunities to discuss implementation questions and concerns. Participants will also have an opportunity to develop strategies for responding to challenging situations that come up during screening students. Substance use screening and interviewing requires a specialized set of skills that require practice to master. This session provides opportunities to practice and build experience with Motivational Interviewing and Brief Intervention skills that were taught in SBIRT I – Introduction. This session will also provide participants with knowledge and skills to help motivate students to change unhealthy behaviors related to alcohol and other drug use.
Building-level teams will spend the fourth hour planning SBIRT pilots and discussing specifics of implementation of the NRSD SBIRT Plan for SY17-18.
Contact Donna Linstrom (dlinstrom@nrsd.net) if you have not participated in an SBIRT 1 training.
NOTE: This workshop is mandatory for middle school and high school nurses, guidance counselors, adjustment counselors, and interventionists. MS and HS administrators invited to attend the first hour (8-9 a.m.).
